Medically Assisted Weight Management

For those who struggle with weight loss through diet and exercise, medically assisted weight management can help. Our telehealth program provides one-on-one guidance so we can create a plan that works for you…all from the comfort of your own home.

What is Medically Assisted Weight Management?

Medically assisted weight management refers to the use of medical interventions, such as medications, to help individuals achieve and maintain a healthy weight.

This approach is often used for those who have been unsuccessful with traditional diet and exercise methods, and may involve a combination of medical, nutritional, and behavioral support.

The goal of medically assisted weight management is to assist individuals in making lifestyle changes that lead to long-term weight loss and improved overall health.

Subcutaneous Options

Tirzepatide and Semaglutide

Tirzepatide and semaglutide are both medications that belong to a class of drugs called GLP-1 receptor agonists. This means that they mimic the actions of a natural hormone in the body called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1).

GLP-1 is produced by the body in response to food intake and helps regulate blood sugar levels. It also plays a role in appetite regulation, satiety (feeling of fullness), and energy expenditure. GLP-1 receptor agonists like tirzepatide and semaglutide can help with weight loss by targeting these pathways.

There are some differences in how tirzepatide and semaglutide work for weight loss. These differences are based on the structure of the drugs and the dosing regimen.

Structure: Tirzepatide is a dual agonist, which means that it activates two receptors – the GLP-1 receptor and the glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) receptor. This dual mechanism of action allows Tirzepatide to have a more potent effect on weight loss compared to Semaglutide, which is a single GLP-1 receptor agonist.

Dosing regimen: Both are administered once a week.

Targeted weight loss: Tirzepatide is specifically approved for weight management in people with type 2 diabetes, while semaglutide is approved for both weight management in people with and without type 2 diabetes. This could mean that tirzepatide may be more effective for weight loss in people with diabetes, as it directly targets the glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) receptor, which plays a role in glucose and fat metabolism.

Additional benefits: In addition to weight loss, tirzepatide and semaglutide have been shown to provide other health benefits, such as reducing blood sugar levels, improving insulin sensitivity, and lowering cardiovascular risk. However, tirzepatide has shown to be more effective in achieving these additional benefits compared to semaglutide, possibly due to its dual mechanism of action.

Oral Options

Naltrexone and Bupropion

Naltrexone/bupropion is a combination medication that is FDA-approved for weight loss in adults who are obese or overweight with at least one weight-related health condition (such as high blood pressure or diabetes).

Naltrexone is typically used to treat opioid or alcohol dependence, but in this combination medication, it works by blocking the effects of the brain’s reward system, which can reduce cravings and overeating.

Bupropion is an antidepressant that also has an effect on the brain’s reward system, and it is believed to work by increasing the brain’s levels of the neurotransmitter dopamine, which can reduce appetite and food cravings.

Together, naltrexone and bupropion work to help curb cravings and reduce appetite, making it easier for individuals to stick to a lower calorie diet and lose weight. They may also have a small impact on increasing the body’s metabolism, leading to additional weight loss.

It is important to note that naltrexone/bupropion is meant to be used as part of a comprehensive weight loss program that includes a healthy diet and regular exercise. It is not a magic pill and must be used in conjunction with lifestyle changes for best results.

Phentermine

Phentermine is a medication that is used for short-term weight loss in obese or overweight individuals. It is classified as a sympathomimetic amine and is prescribed in combination with a reduced-calorie diet, exercise, and behavioral modification.

Phentermine works by stimulating the release of norepinephrine, a neurotransmitter that signals the fight or flight response in the body. This leads to a decrease in appetite and an increase in energy expenditure.

Phentermine also increases the levels of dopamine and serotonin, which can improve mood and reduce food cravings. By decreasing appetite and increasing energy expenditure, phentermine helps individuals consume fewer calories and burn more calories, resulting in weight loss.

It is important to note that phentermine is meant to be used as a short-term treatment for obesity and is not a long-term solution for weight loss. In addition to its effects on appetite and energy expenditure, phentermine can also help improve insulin sensitivity, which can be beneficial for individuals with obesity-related metabolic disorders such as diabetes.

Overall, phentermine works to promote weight loss through multiple mechanisms, including appetite suppression, increased energy expenditure, improved insulin sensitivity, and potentially also through mood regulation. It is important to follow a healthy diet and exercise regularly while taking phentermine to achieve the best results.
